FRESH A.I.R. Projekt von Kerasia Tsiantzi

Physical and social dynamics of public space play a central role in the formation of publics and public culture. The city’s streets, parks, squares, and other shared spaces have been seen as symbols of collective well-being and possibility, expressions of achievement and aspiration by young people, sites of public encounter and formation of civic culture, and significant spaces of creation and evolution.

With the multiple usage of public space and proliferation of the sites of political and cultural expression, it seems odd to expect public spaces to fulfill their traditional role as spaces of civic inculcation and political participation. We are far enough from the times when a city’s central public space were a prime cultural and political site. In classical Rome and ancient Greece the public spaces of a city were key sites of cultural formation and popular political practice.  It’s where citizens debated everything, from current events to business to the nature of the universe. It’s where they voted for politicians, preserved the law and participated collectively in making decisions for civic matters.

In the same time, urban art in public spaces add usability and functionality to abandoned or remote places of the city. It creates new experiences and stories. A good public space is not only inviting but built a place for a community around the artwork by growing and attracting activities that make it a multi-use destination. Part of this experience is also the physical interaction of the artwork. Today’s artists know that the art needs to be touched and experimented with as people walk past the artworks. The viewer needs to see the changes in the public space as a result of his movements. Viewers become active participants. In that way urban art and installations, generate spontaneous expression and social connection, giving us new perspectives on ourselves and the world we share.

Alongside, art in public space remains an ornamental sign in urban environments. As it can connect rural and urban environments, the artworks can bring nature to the mundane, grey, bleak walls of boring city buildings or streets and give them life. The problem analysis began from the space observation. Where do people seat when they are in a public space? How they feel more comfortable? Are all these benches and places to seat, comfortable for the human body? Are they enough for the number of people that use them or we need more? The crowd is concentrated more in rural or urban spaces? People enliven a work, are inspired and intrigued, motivated and provoked. The public role in public art is essential to the artist who can take advantage of the freedom of expression and to create the opportunity for those who may not go frequent to museums or galleries to view meaningful art for free.

In her project »fLuiD« the artist Kerasia Tsiantzi developed a seating system which was constructed from a concrete 3D printer. The design of this item is organic and is a result of the combination of different body postures that people can have when they sit in public spaces. The problem analysis began from the space observation. Where do people sit when they are in a public space? Research carried out on interesting forms that already exist in the public area concluded that these outdoor seats have the following characteristics: they are easy to use as they can cover a wide range of different scenarios, they can meet the needs of many people for seating and socializing but at the same time allowing a person to be isolated. They are weather-resistant and ergonomic, while at the same time stylish to fit in with their surroundings. They are semi-permanent structures that can be moved and repositioned.

Concrete is the most used building material worldwide. Raw materials to produce concrete are cheap and readily available in most places on the globe. It is strong, durable, fire resistant, and, due to its fluid state before setting, can be applied in practically any shape. In the same time 3D printing is a time- saving process which can build resistant structures. Also, it’s the best way to reduce waste of material as it only uses the exact amount that a printer needs. The printer can work continuously for hours as the same time the labor costs are declined. Also, something really important is the cost of every item about the consumer. The companies working with 3D printers stand up for really affordable prices even for poor population. Last but not least, the design possibilities are endless with the use of a 3D printer. These robotic machines can give life to incredible designs thanks to this freeform construction method. Printing at an architectural scale is difficult, but concrete 3D printers have some real game-changing benefits.

More than ever before, it seems really crucial to create public artworks that are stimulating and invite active dialogue between viewers and creators. The end of passive observation of an artwork fosters a social interaction that can even lead to a sense of social cohesion among viewers. Nowadays artworks in public space started to move toward flexibility, changeability, evolution and an appreciation for humanity so to transform public spaces from ersatz cemeteries into great multi-use public destinations.

Public art projects that engage the community in aspects of the art-making process can provide communities with means to improve and protect their environment, to develop a sense of pride and ownership over the public spaces of the city and to take care of them. In this way, public art can contribute both to community life and vitality of public spaces.
